Jochen Schneider DP

JOCHEN SCHNEIDER | Head of Sport

Jochen Schneider was named Head of Sport of the New York Red Bulls on June 10, 2022. He will have oversight on all aspects of the sporting side of the club.

Schneider, 51, most recently held the position of Head of Sport and Communication at Schalke 04 FC. His career in soccer began in 1999 at VfB Stuttgart as an assistant to former Head of Sport Rolf Rüssmann. In 2004, he was then promoted to Sporting Director, winning the Bundesliga in 2007, working with Horst Heldt and Fredi Bobic.

In 2015, he joined the Red Bull family, where he took on the role of Coordinator Sport Global Soccer. In June 2017, he was promoted to Head of Sport & Internationalization for RB Leipzig, working closely with Ralf Rangnick.

Schneider has worked with many players over his career including German National Team stars Timo Werner, Antonio Rudiger and Sami Khedira. He also brought in young talents to RB Leipzig such as Ibrahima Konaté and United States Men's National Team star (and former New York Red Bulls midfielder) Tyler Adams.

JULIAN DE GUZMAN | Sporting Director

Julian De Guzman was named Sporting Director in February 2024. He was most recently a founder, managing partner, and president of Simcoe Rovers County FC, which is a club in League1 Ontario. Prior to Simcoe, de Guzman was the General Manager of Ottawa Fury Football Club, where he managed the day-to-day operations of the sporting department and helped guide Ottawa to a USL Championship playoff appearance in 2019. He was also the Head Coach of Ottawa Fury during the 2017 season.

The Toronto, Ontario native had a 19-year playing career, which began with Olympique de Marseille in their youth and reserve program. After he signed his first professional contract with 1. FC Saarbrücken in German 2. Bundesliga. De Guzman played 84 matches for Hanover before he made the move to Deportivo La Coruna in La Liga. 

De Guzman joined Toronto FC in Major League Soccer in 2009 as a Designated Player, becoming the first-ever Canadian Designated Player in league history. He is the second-leading Canadian in all-time CONCACAF Champions League appearances with 18 and he won the Canadian Championship with Toronto FC in 2010, 2011, and 2012. He finished his playing career with Ottawa Fury FC, where he was the club captain and also during his last season in 2016, he was the Ottawa Fury reserve team coach. 

De Guzman played 17 years for the Canadian National Team system, which includes 14 years with the senior national team. He made his debut for the senior national team in a 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup match against Martinique. He was named to six Gold Cup teams for Canada and was named the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament MVP and was named to the CONCACAF Gold Cup All-Tournament team in 2007 and 2009. De Guzman was voted the Canadian Men’s National Soccer team Player of the Year in 2008 and is the second all-time caps leader for Canada with 89 appearances. He started 25 games as Canada’s captain.

SANDRO SCHWARZ | Head Coach

Sandro Schwarz, a native of Mainz, Germany, started his professional playing career with FSV Mainz 05, his hometown club. He made his professional debut for the club in 1998 and was with the club until 2004, where he made 107 appearances across all competitions. Schwarz tallied two goals and six assists for Mainz. He moved to Rot-Weiss Essen in 2004 and then finished out his professional playing career with SV Wehen Wiesbaden, until he retired in 2009. 

Schwarz got his coaching start with SV Wehen Wiesbaden in 2009 as an assistant coach. He earned his first head coaching position in 2011 with FC Eschborn, where he won the championship in the Hessenliga in his first season in charge. In 2013, Schwarz moved back to his old club of FSV Mainz, where he started as a U-19 coach and then worked with way up to lead their second team. He was then named Head Coach of his former club in 2017, where he was in charge until 2019 and kept the club in the Bundesliga all three seasons he was there. 

After his time with FSV Mainz, Schwarz was named head coach of FC Dynamo Moscow in the Russian Premier League. He amassed a 32-17-8 record in his two seasons in charge and led Dynamo Moscow to their first Top-3 finish in 14 years. After the 2022 season, Schwarz joined Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga and was in charge until April of 2023.

VOLKAN BULUT | Assistant Coach

Volkan Bulut joins New York after previously being on his staff during his stints at Dynamo Moscow and Hertha Berlin. Bulut brings 11 years of experience as an assistant coach and has coached also at TSV Havelse, SC Paderborn, FC Schalke 04, and Hannover 96.  Bulut had a 10-year playing career where he played for TuS Celle FC, SC Langenhagen, VfV Hildesheim, and FC Can Mozaik.

VEDAD IBIÅ EVIC | Assistant Coach

Vedad Ibiševic joins New York after serving as an assistant coach with Hertha Berlin since 2022, which was the beginning of his coaching career. He played collegiately at Saint Louis University in 2003, where he was named one of the Top 25 recruits in the nation. He played professionally for Paris Saint-Germain, Alemannia Aachen, 1899 Hoffenheim, VfB Stuttgart, Hertha Berlin and Schalke 04. Ibiševic played internationally for Bosnia and Herzegovina, where made 83 appearances and scored 28 goals. He played in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s first FIFA World Cup appearance in 2014, where he scored the first-ever Bosnia goal in FIFA World Cup history against Argentina.

IBRAHIM SEKAGYA | Assistant Coach

Ibrahim Sekagya, in addition to continuing to serve as head coach of the New York Red Bulls II for his third season, will also become an assistant coach for the New York Red Bulls. In his first full season at the helm, Sekagya led NYRB II to the Eastern Conference semifinals in their first season in MLS NEXT Pro, the club had a record of 14-8-6 and finished fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Prior to being head coach, Sekagya served as an assistant coach for NYRB II since their inaugural season in 2015. The Kampala, Uganda native played for the New York Red Bulls for two seasons in 2013 and 2014, where he made 41 appearances across all competitions and was a member of the 2013 Supporters Shield winning team. He also played for Red Bull Salzburg from 2007 to 2013, where he made 225 appearances for the club.

JEREMY PROUD | Goalkeepers Coach

Jeremy Proud will enter his first season as the goalkeepers coach for New York Red Bulls, after serving as New York Red Bulls II goalkeeper coach for the last two seasons.

Prior to coming on the staff in 2021 with NYRB II, Proud spent two years as the Goalkeeper Coach for Red Bulls Academy. He spent 14 years coaching at the Men’s NCAA Division One Level, including stops at University of Akron, University of Louisville, Loyola University of Chicago, and SIUE.

He played at Fresno State University, where he left the school as the all-time saves leader and earned All-Pac 10 honors his senior year in 2002.

DOMINIK WOHLERT | Assistant Coach & Head of Match Analysis

Dominik Wohlert joined the New York Red Bulls in January of 2022 as the Head of Match Analysis  and has served in that role since he has arrived at the club. Wohlert will serve as an Assistant Coach alongside his role of Head of Match Analysis under Head Coach Sandro Schwarz. In his role, he has helped New York earn two-straight postseason appearances.

Prior to New York, Wohlert was at Hertha Berlin, where he served as an assistant coach from July 2021 to December 2021. Wohlert served as Chief Analyst for eight years, from 2013 to 2021. Prior to that, he was a scout for Hertha Berlin for seven months. While Wohlert was at Hertha Berlin SC, they remained in the Bundesliga all eight years.
