Red Bulls Sign Four Players to Roster

HARRISON, NJ (March 5, 2012) – The Red Bulls announced today that the club has signed four new players to its roster: defender Tyler Ruthven, midfielder Brandon Barklage and forwards Jose Angulo and Jhonny Arteaga. Per league and club rules, the terms of each deal were not disclosed.

“We are excited to bring in these four players,” said Red Bulls General Manager and Sporting Director Erik Soler. “Brandon has some experience in Major League Soccer already, and Jose, Jhonny and Tyler are all young players that we feel can develop into contributors for our squad. All four of them did well in preseason to earn a spot on our roster. We look forward to monitoring their development this season and beyond.”

Barklage, 25, has spent the past three seasons with D.C. United after the club selected him in the third round of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft (36th overall) out of Saint Louis University. The St. Louis, MO native has logged 341 minutes in 11 career Major League Soccer appearances. Barklage spent two seasons each on the collegiate level at the University of New Mexico and Saint Louis University. He began his college career at New Mexico, earning First Team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors as a sophomore at the school in 2006. During his senior year in 2008 while at Saint Louis, Barklage was a Second Team All-Atlantic 10 selection.

Ruthven spent the 2011 season with the Atlanta Silverbacks of the NASL. The 23-year-old played in 27 games for Atlanta, scoring one goal, and earned the league’s Defensive Player of the Week honors on July 26. He turned professional in 2010, signing with USL-2 side Harrisburg City Islanders. The Alpharetta, GA native played in eight games for the team, notching one goal. He began his college soccer career at the University of San Francisco, but transferred to the University of South Carolina in 2007 for his sophomore season. As a senior, he earned First Team All-Conference USA accolades.

Arteaga, 25, most recently played for USL Pro side FC New York in 2011. Arteaga led USL Pro this past season with 13 goals, and scored 16 in all competitions. In 2010, he featured for Polish third division side LKS Lomza, for whom he scored an impressive eight goals in just 14 appearances. Prior to playing in Poland, Arteaga played for USL PDL side Westchester Flames in 2009 and the Western Mass Pioneers of the USL Second Division in 2008. Arteaga grew up in Stamford, CT and played on the collegiate level at Dominican College, earning the Central Atlantic College Conference Player of the Year in 2007 as a senior.

Angulo, 24, played last season with the Harrisburg City Islanders of USL Pro, leading the club with nine goals. Prior to joining Harrisburg City, Angulo enjoyed a proficient season for the Central Jersey Spartans in 2010, recording 10 goals in 11 appearances for the USL PDL outfit.  Angulo grew up in nearby Clifton, NJ, and played on the high school level at St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, NJ where he was named a Parade Magazine All-American.
