HARRISON, N.J. (May 20, 2016) – New York Red Bulls II has signed defender Zach Carroll, the club announced today.

“Zach is guy that possesses a lot of tools that will help us in our USL season and we’re glad to be able to hold onto him,” head coach John Wolyniec said. “He’s a big, strong and athletic kid that’s tactically intelligent. It was difficult to make a decision to let Zach go from the first team, but we’re excited to hold onto a player that we feel has a very bright future.”

Carroll was selected by the New York Red Bulls in the second round of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, 38th overall, and signed to an MLS contract on March 3. This season, the 22-year-old made five appearances on loan to NYRB II in the United Soccer League before he was waived on May 5.

Carroll, a native of Grand Blanc, Mich., spent two seasons at Virginia before transferring to Michigan State ahead of his junior year. He played 39 games for the Spartans, starting 38, and recorded seven goals and four assists over his junior and senior seasons. He earned First Team All-Big Ten honors and was named to the NSCAA Second Team All-Midwest Region as a senior.

Carroll is the 13th player signed to a USL contract on the Red Bulls II roster, and the club’s eighth signing of 2016.
