MONTCLAIR, N.J. (May 14, 2023) - New York Red Bulls II (2-2-3, 11 pts.) are set to host New York City FC II (3-2-1 10 pts.) in Montclair for the first New York Derby in MLS NEXT Pro. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET and coverage is available on MLS Season Pass with Apple TV.
Red Bulls II are coming off a disappointing result in their last match, after falling to Philadelphia Union II by a score of 2-1. Forward Ricardo Gorday scored the lone goal for New York in the match when he converted from the penalty spot in the 78th minute. New York still sits at fifth in the Eastern Conference with 11 points on the year.
New York City FC II will be filled with confidence coming into the match, having put out arguably their best performance of the year last week against New England Revolution II. They won the contest 4-2 after being down 2-1 as late as the 80th minute. Three late goals secured the victory at Belson Stadium in Queens for New York City. The win moved them up to sixth in the Eastern Conference standings with 10 points.
Defense and goalkeeping have been keys for Red Bulls II this season, as the club sits at fourth in goals against in MLS NEXT Pro with seven. New York also has the fifth highest save percentage in the league, having stopped 78% of all shots faced this year.
New York City FC II are going to look to put the Red Bulls II back line to the test, having the fifth most shots on target so far in the league. Their attack has been led in part by forward John Denis, who ranks first in the league in shot attempts with 30, and is second in MLS NEXT Pro in shots on target with 12. The club itself is sitting at fourth in the league in total shots on target, putting up 42 shots on net this season.
The II’s continue their three match homestand this week and next at MSU Soccer Park, facing Inter Miami CF II on May 21st. They will look to improve their 1-2-1 record at home tonight in the MLS NEXT Pro New York Derby.
