This fall’s RDS Goalie Wars event on October 28th was another big success for the organization. With over 80 candidates participating, we were in for a great display of goalkeeping skill and the young players did not disappoint. There was quite some talent throughout the three age groups, and it made for one of the most competitive challenges in the past few years.
The U10 age group, which debuted this past spring, is quickly turning into a fan favorite, featuring many young eager competitors as well as a few first-timers. Charles Vasallo of Bergen Football Academy came out on top, winning the title with a gritty display in the final round.
The U12 age group was also quite competitive and featured many returners and Eli Raz, the spring season U10 champion. However, Raz of Brooklyn Italians could not hold off Zachary Vanderbeck of Union County FC. Vanderbeck with his tall frame, reach and rocket of an arm was not to be denied.
The oldest group, the U14s, comprised the most returners with veterans and former battling to take the crown. In the end, Cooper Hazelton of PDA, a multiple-time U12 winner, fell in one of the most competitive finals in Goalie Wars' recent history. Aidan Zacharczyk of CSA Monmouth and Gabe Ursic of The Football Academy finished tied on points and went to only the second-ever Goalie Wars extra-time shootout, with Ursic eventually coming out on top in a nail-biting finish.
The RDS Goalie Wars experience was capped off as winners and participants were honored at Red Bull Arena before the MLS Playoff game vs FC Cincinnati on November 4th. The goalkeepers all also had the opportunity to watch the goalkeeper warmups from the sideline in what was a memorable experience for all involved.
RDS Winter goalkeeper clinics are now available for registration and RDS Goalie Wars will be back in 2024.
