The New York Red Bulls touched down in San Salvador Tuesday afternoon on a warm, muggy day preparing for their penultimate CONCACAF Champions League game tomorrow night at 10:00 PM at Estadio Cuscatian against CD FAS (TV: Fox Soccer Plus, Univision Deportes).
With MLS rival and Group 3 the Montreal Impact (3-0-0) at nine points following their 1-0 win over the Red Bulls at Stade Saputo last Wednesday, only a win will do against CD FAS to keep New York’s (1-1-0, 3 pts.) chances of advancing alive. New York hosts Montreal at Red Bull Arena on October 22 in the group’s final match and the winner of the group makes it to the tournament’s knockout round in early 2015.
Rather than training Tuesday morning in their practice facility in New Jersey, the Red Bulls flew down to San Salvador on Tuesday morning to hold a light training session at Estadio Cuscatian prior to the match and check out the field. The team did their typical boxes drill before working on a half-field possession game before departing amid torrential downpours.
New York defeated CD FAS, 2-0, at Red Bull Arena on August 26 in a match which the Red Bulls mainly controlled. However, the Red Bulls are expecting a tough proposition on Wednesday despite the fact that CD FAS is already eliminated from advancing from the group.
Estadio Cuscatian is typically home to the El Salvador National Team and club side, CD Atletico Marte. Located centrally in San Salvador, it holds approximately 53,000 people with steep sightlines around the field.
