Red Bull New York announced today that it has added former defender Mike Petke to its staff on a full time basis as Individual Developmental Coach and Business Operations Manager. Petke will serve the Red Bulls in a variety of roles, working within different departments in the front office and the coaching staff.
“I am excited and honored to begin my post-playing career with the Red Bulls,” Petke said. “This is where I started and ended my career, and there’s no place I’d rather be. I always will consider this club as my home and I am thrilled to be able to contribute my ideas here."
Petke began his decorated 13-year playing career when he was selected eighth overall by the MetroStars in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent the first five years of his professional career with New York, helping lead the team to the 2000 Eastern Division title and an appearance in the Eastern Conference Final that season. Petke’s passion, gritty playing style and his famous penchant for sticking up for his teammates made the Bohemia, NY native a fan favorite during his first stint with the franchise. For his successes, Petke was named an MLS All-Star in 2000, 2001, and 2002.
“Mike is one of the all-time great players to suit up for the Red Bulls,” said Red Bulls Managing Director Erik Stover. “He has represented our club well both on and off the field and it is only fitting that he remains with us as he enters the next phase of his life. Mike’s passion for this club is unmatched, and his expertise and dedication will boost our entire organization.”
During his seven seasons with the New York franchise, Petke became the club leader in games played, games started, and minutes played. In all, Petke played in 169 games for New York, scoring five goals and four assists. Additionally, Petke appeared in nine playoff matches and 13 U.S. Open Cup matches.
Following the 2002 season, Petke was traded to D.C. United where he played in 58 games and scored five goals. He helped United win MLS Cup in 2004, After spending almost three seasons in the Nation’s Capital, Petke moved on to play four seasons with the Colorado Rapids, appearing in 80 matches until 2009, when he returned for his second stint in New York. In 2009, Petke was honored with the teams Defender of the Year award.
