Game Notes vs. Atlanta United
All-Time Series: New York leads, 5-1-2
HARRISON, N.J. (July 9, 2020) –The New York Red Bulls (1-0-1, 4 pts) Atlanta United FC (2-0-0, 6 pts) kick off Group E Saturday night at 8 p.m. ET on FOX. The Red Bulls other two Group E opponents, Columbus and Cincinnati, will faceoff at 10:30 ET on FS1. All matches will feature at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
It will be precisely 126 days, four hours and nine minutes, from the end of the whistle of the Real Salt Lake match to kickoff of the Atlanta United match, since New York has played a competitive match due to the pandemic hitting the United States.
Saturday will be the seventh regular-season match and ninth match across all competitions between the Red Bulls and Atlanta. New York holds a strong lead on the regular-season and overall series record at 4-0-2 and 5-1-2 and outscoring its opponent, 11-5, in regular-season matches. The Red Bulls-Atlanta matchup will be broadcast on national television for the seventh consecutive time, the second of which featured on FOX. The last time these two teams met on FOX was July 7, 2019 in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Despite departures of both New York's all-time scoring leader and goaltender, Bradley Wright-Phillips and Luis Robles, the Red Bulls current core has found plenty of success versus the Five Stripes. Austrian winger Danny Royer has enjoyed his matches against Atlanta, tallying four goals and two assists in six matches. Ryan Meara also had one of his best regular-season performances against Atlanta, recording six saves on seven chances in a 3-1 win as he stepped in for an injured Luis Robles.
New York has had four different goal scorers through the first two matches of 2020. Last season, the Red Bulls also began the season with four different goal scorers en route to seeing 18 different players tally a goal in 34 MLS regular-season matches. The 18 different goal scorers set a franchise record and tied the league record set by D.C. United in 2016.
New York’s Group E second match will be against Columbus Crew SC on Thursday, July 16 at 10:30 p.m. ET, with coverage on FS1, Fox Deportes and Red Bulls Radio.
