New York enters the 2020 MLS season following a sixth-place finish in the Eastern Conference, finishing last season with 48 points and a 14-6-14 record. Despite a solid season, the Red Bulls 2019 season finished with a tough 4-3 loss in extra time in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals against the Philadelphia Union.
The Red Bulls and FC Cincinnati met first at Red Bull Arena in April of 2019, where New York came out with a 1-0 win, as Connor Lade scored the lone goal. In the away match of the home-and-home series, the Red Bulls came out victorious again, winning 2-0 with late goals by Kaku and Omir Fernandez.
New York is led offensively by Austrian winger Daniel Royer, who led the 2019 squad with 11 goals and six assists and is returning for his fifth season with the club. Kaku returns as New York’s No. 10, who led all Red Bull midfielders in goals with five in 26 games played. Defensively, the Red Bulls return one of MLS’ top centerback duos in U.S. Men’s National Team defenders Aaron Long and Tim Parker, who helped anchor a Red Bulls backline to nine clean sheets, tied for the fifth most in MLS last season.
Following Sunday’s season opener, New York will travel West to face Real Salt Lake on Saturday, March 7. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. ET from Rio Tinto Stadium.
