New York’s four-match MLS winning streak was snapped Sunday night at Yankee Stadium as David Villa’s first MLS hat trick edged Bradley Wright-Phillips’ 14th career MLS regular-season brace. Despite the three goals allowed, Luis Robles recorded a game-best and a season-high seven saves in net.
With Daniel Royer falling to injury early in the match, Wright-Phillips picked up the slack as he tallied his 12th and 13th goal of the season to move to third amongst the league’s best this season. The English striker has caught fire of late, scoring nine goals in the last 10 games. All 13 of BWP’s goals this season have occurred during the run of play.
Sacha Kljestan continued to build upon his resume as one of the league’s top distributing midfielders as he tallied his 78th and 79th career assists on Sunday. It was the 10th multi-assist performance of his career and he moved into sole possession of 13th all-time in league history.
Saturday’s match will feature two goalkeepers that sit atop the league in saves. Joe Bendik leads the league with 83 saves, while Luis Robles is tied for second with 78. Bendik (6) and Robles (7) combine for 13 shutouts this season.
