The New York Red Bulls played to a scoreless draw in their home opener at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night vs. Nashville SC.
The Red Bulls have now posted an 8-3-3 record in their home openers since Red Bull Arena opened in 2010.
New York created plenty of chances, but could not put the ball in the back of the net. Their defense was stellar, again though, not allowing a shot on goal from open play for the second match of 2023.
"I think we deserved the win today," Head Coach Gerhard Struber said. It was not good enough, but in the end, the chances, we have to score. We have, I would say, three good moments, but in the end, not the killer moments that we want."
Carlos Coronel posted his first shutout of the season after posting eight shutouts last year. Coronel has recorded 13 career shutouts at Red Bull Arena. The Brazilian goalkeeper has posted 22 shutouts in his New York Red Bulls career, where he ranks third all-time in club history and only four shy of second place. New York have posted 85 shutouts at home since 2010, which is the most in MLS during that timespan.
"A silver lining to get the shutout that gives us some good confidence on our defensive ability," Sean Nealis said. "We want to get a win, especially at home, and hopefully we can get a win next week."
"The fans deserved more today, especially from our side," Struber said. "We played on a good level. It was a tough game against the opponent, they make it not always easy."
Kyle Duncan made his season debut, coming on at halftime. Cory Burke followed soon after, making his Red Bulls' RBA debut. Dante Vanzeir, New York's newest Designated Player, made his MLS debut.
"In the end, especially at home, we have to score and we have to win games," Struber said.
New York heads on the road to face Minnesota United FC on Saturday, March 11 at Allianz Field. Kickoff is set for 8:30 pm. ET with coverage on Apple TV in English and Spanish and New York Red Bulls Radio in English via Tune In, the New York Red Bulls app, and NewYorkRedBulls.com.
