The Montreal Impact ambushed the MLS-leading New York Red Bulls 3-0 at Stade Saputo on Saturday evening, riding two first-half set-piece strikes to knock off an RBNY side missing several starters as they complete a draining stretch of five matches in 15 days.
Impact superstar Nacho Piatti added a late exclamation point to burnish the final margin of victory after seeing a previous finish waved off by an offside call determined via Video Review.
The decisive goals came from Rod Fanni and Bacary Sagna, two of Impact coach Remi Garde's Francophone 2018 recruits, both via close-range headers and both first MLS tallies for the veteran defenders, who also contributed mightily to a tidy performance along the Montreal back line. RBNY dangerman Bradley Wright-Phillips was kept remarkably quiet all night, limited to just one shot (off target) and minimal touches inside the Impact penalty area.
The Red Bulls rotated usual back-line starters Tim Parker and Michael Murillo out of the starting lineup and dropped influential midfielder Tyler Adams out of the 18-man gameday roster altogether, leaving the young star at home ahead of his expected call-up to the U.S. national team.
