July 5th, 2003 - Gaven gets in goal, scores extra-time winner vs. DC at RFK
Eddie Gaven scored 51 career goals in 11 seasons in MLS, 16 of them coming in three seasons with the MetroStars. One of Gaven’s biggest – and most memorable – goals as a MetroStar was an overtime winner against D.C. United on July 5, 2003.
At the beginning of the first overtime session, then head coach Bob Bradley swapped goalkeeper Tim Howard and midfielder Mark Lisi and then brought on Gaven to replace Lisi in goal having already made his three substitutions.
After a brief stop in play on ball played out of bounds by the MetroStars, Gaven and Howard swapped positions and Gaven returned to the field and scored the game-winning goal at RFK Stadium.
Gaven on the move:
“I didn't know what was going on. [Bob] just said, ‘You're going in via some strange rule and you have to put on the goalie gloves and the goalie jersey first.’ Our team was going to try and hit the ball out of bounds then we were going to switch with Tim Howard.
That's exactly what we did, and we ended up getting the ball. They made it very easy for me, very clear that as soon as it goes out, go up with Tim and exchange jerseys and just go out and play.”
