In a record-setting night, the MetroStars clinched the Eastern Division in grand fashion as Clint Mathis scored an MLS-record five goals in leading the Metros to a 6-4 victory over the Dallas Burn at the Cotton Bowl. With the win, the MetroStars clinched their first Eastern Division title and thus secured a playoff spot for the third time in team history.
