June 24th, 1998 - Petke's golazo leads Metros past Revs 5-3
The MetroStars set a team record for goals in a game and held on to defeat the New England Revolution, 5-3, before 10,310 on a humid night at the Meadowlands to improve their record to 9-7 and reclaim second place in the Eastern Conference. Brian Kelly led the MetroStars on offense, scoring his team's first and third goals of the game, both on headers. In the 40th minute he charged into the path of the ball after it caromed off the crossbar, and in the 53rd minute he converted following Ian Feuer's save of Diego Soñora's shot.
The Revolution made it close with quick goals by Edwin Gorter, in the 64th minute, and Raul Diaz Arce, in the 68th, but rookie defender Mike Petke's cannon shot from 25 yards out sealed the win for the home squad.
Paul Dougherty added a goal and two assists, and Giovanni Savarese improved his team-leading goal total to eight as the MetroStars jumped past idle Columbus and back into second place.
