Red Bulls select Luther Archimede 13th overall in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft
HARRISON, N.J. (January 21, 2021) – The New York Red Bulls selected Guadeloupe National Team and Syracuse University forward Luther Archimede with the 13th overall pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft, presented by Adidas. Following their First Round selection, New York added Lamine Conte (40th overall) in the Second Round and AJ Marcucci (67th overall) in the Third Round.
Archimede, a 6-foot-2 forward, spent the 2019 Fall collegiate season with the Orange, tallying four goals and one assist in 17 appearances. With the Syracuse 2020 season shortened to just five matches, he started all four matches and tallied five shots on goal.
Prior to Syracuse, Archimede featured for both the Under-20 Guadeloupe National team and the Guadeloupe National team. The Guadeloupean forward recorded six goals in five matches during the 2018 Concacaf U-20 Championship. Most recently, he made his first appearance for the senior team on March 24, 2019 against Martinique in the Concacaf Nations League qualifiers.
Conte, a 5-foot-11 defensive midfielder, was a three-year starter for the University of Louisville. His freshman season in 2018 was highlighted with an ACC Championship All-Tournament Team nod and recorded his first collegiate assist against Michigan State in the 2018 NCAA Tournament second round match. Over three years, Conte accrued 25 starts in 31 appearances with one assist in 939 minutes played.
Outside of collegiate play, Conte was a member of Reading United AC for three seasons. He featured in three of Reading United’s U.S. Open Cup matches, tallying three starts and 300 minutes played at center back.
Marcucci, a 6-foot-3 goalkeeper, spent three years in net for Connecticut College. During his time at Connecticut College, he amassed 54 starts, a 0.50 goals-against average, an .887 save percentage and a 33-10-8 record with 22 shutouts. Marcucci recently led the Camels to a 2019 NCAA DIII Tournament quarterfinals appearance after back-to-back shutouts in the second and third round.
