On March 29th, 2025, following a successful regional expansion in 2024, the Red Bulls hosted the first-ever All-Girls Goalie Wars event on the Hoboken Waterfront overlooking the picturesque Manhattan skyline. The event, a long time in planning, was warmly received by parents and onlookers, who turned out to cheer on the players.
The afternoon was packed with excitement—featuring dramatic saves, goals, and nonstop action. Goalkeepers competed in a 1v1 format, with the highest scorers advancing. Around 30 girls took part in the 2016-2013 age group, and the 2012-2010 category.
As the shadows lengthened, Sadie Sellers (2013) from Red Bull Youth Partner club Hoboken United and Emilie Gatzemeyer (2011) from Next Level Soccer Academy were crowned champions in their younger and older age groups respectively.
Red Bulls Regional Development School Manager Duane Peña presented the trophies and spent time engaging with the players and families. “From the very first Goalie Wars in 2021 when we saw the interest of female goalkeepers in competing, we have had our eye on launching an all-girls event.”
Peña praised the level of talent on display, noting, “The Tri-State area has historically been a hotbed for girls’ soccer with USWNT goalkeepers Alyssa Naeher and Casey Murphy playing in the region. Today was no exception, with the athleticism, explosiveness, and bravery of the competitors clear for all to see. Our aim is to keep building on this momentum to support goalkeeper development and create more opportunities for girls”
He continued, “This initiative helps us spotlight talented young goalkeepers while offering a fun and competitive environment for players of all skill levels. It highlights key elements like distribution and ball striking, alongside shot-stopping—skills crucial for the modern keeper.”
