Red Bulls Midfielder Tim Cahill Named to MLS All-Star Game 20-Man Roster

HARRISON, NJ (July 15, 2013) – New York Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill was named to the 2013 MLS All-Star Game’s 20-man gameday roster, earning his first-ever selection to the team. Cahill will join teammate Thierry Henry, who was voted onto the MLS Fan XI, on the side that will face Italian side, AS Roma, on July 31 at 9:00 PM at Sporting Park in Kansas City, KS (TV: ESPN2, UniMas).

In his first full season in Major League Soccer, Cahill has made a significant impact, scoring five goals and three assists in 17 starts. Cahill most recently found the back of the net in New York’s 4-0 win over the then-first place Montreal Impact last Saturday at Red Bull Arena. In addition, the Australian International played a vital role in June to ensure that his country earned qualification to the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

After joining the Red Bulls on July 26, 2012, Cahill started in 12 regular season matches and two postseason games, notching a goal and three assists that year. Cahill came to New York following an illustrious career with English Premier League side, Everton FC, where he played since 2004. He has made 278 appearances for the Toffees, scoring 68 goals over eight seasons with the club. Cahill started and played 76 minutes for Everton in the 2009 MLS All-Star Game – a match that finished 1-1 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Cahill became the 71stst player in Premier League history to reach the 50 goal milestone when he scored against Blackpool in Nov. 6 2010. In October 2006, Cahill was named as one of 50 nominees for the Ballon D’Or, given to the European Footballer of the Year.

Prior to joining Everton, Cahill featured for English side, Millwall, where he made a total of 249 appearances and scored 56 goals. Cahill was part of the side that went the FA Cup Final for the first time in club history in the 2003-04 season and earned a spot in the UEFA Cup.

On the international level, Cahill featured in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups for Australia. He was the first Australian to score a World Cup goal in 2006, when he found the back of the net against Japan, and helped his country earn a spot in the Round of 16.
