WRIGHT PHILLIPS’ BRACE EXTENDS LEAD IN MLS GOLDEN BOOT RACE
New York Red Bulls’ forward Bradley Wright-Phillips scored twice against Houston last Friday to extend his lead in the MLS Golden Boot race. Now with 14 on the season, Wright-Phillips leads Chivas USA’s Erick Torres (12) and Sporting Kansas City’s Dom Dwyer (12) by two goals.
After New York fell behind in the first minute courtesy of a Giles Barnes’ header last Friday, the Englishman leveled the score in the 13th minute. Eric Alexander found Wright-Phillips with a through ball over the top of the Houston back line. Wright-Phillips ran onto the pass and hit a left-footed shot past Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall.
In the second half, Wright-Phillips would strike again to give New York the lead. After getting by Andrew Driver in the corner, Ambroise Oyongo sent a cross into the box that Wright-Phillips headed home past Tall in the 72nd minute.
Wright-Phillips has now scored three goals in his past two games and five goals in his last five matches overall dating back to May 24.
OYONGO RECORDS ASSIST IN SECOND CONSECUTIVE GAME
After recording his first career MLS assist against Toronto on June 27, defender Ambroise Oyongo wasted no time in adding his second, setting up Bradley Wright-Phillips against Houston last Friday night.
The rookie left back made an overlapping run down the left flank for Thierry Henry to play a pass to the corner. After losing Houston defender Andrew Driver with two cutback moves, Oyongo whipped in a left-footed cross that Wright-Phillips headed home to put New York in front 2-1 in the 72nd minute.
Oyongo recorded his first career MLS assist in similar fashion against Toronto. Henry played Oyongo, who made his MLS debut that evening, down the left flank for the defender to cut the ball back, this time on his right foot, and pick out Peguy Luyindula in the box.
Oyongo, in his first season with the Red Bulls and MLS, signed with the club in early March 2014. He earned the start in the Red Bulls’ U.S. Open Cup game against the New York Cosmos on June 14.
