The New York Red Bulls exacted their revenge against the Philadelphia Union last weekend, bouncing back from their early season loss with a 2-0 win on Sunday.
After the match, the Red Bulls admitted they didn’t have their best game, but were happy with their ability to stick with the game and find a way to score.
“Last time we were here we played a lot better,” Bradley Wright-Phillips said. “It was just one of those games we had to hang in there and as they went down to 10 men we know spaces would open up.”
Following the Union’s red card in the 53rd minute, Wright-Phillips scored in the 87th and 92nd minute to win the match for the Red Bulls.
Wright-Phillips minced no words, saying that prior to the goals he felt his play was worthy of ‘coming out of the game,’ but stuck with it and buried his chances.
“I did think I’ll get an opportunity,” Wright-Phillips said. “I wanted to stay in for that…but at the end of the day it’s a good away win.”
Sacha Kljestan also admitted the team is capable of playing better, saying they felt ‘tired legs and tired minds’ in the 90-degree summer heat.
However, the Red Bulls captain was happy with the team’s ability to take three points on the road and hopes for a similar result when they face off again next week in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
“We're feeling good right now. I'm also impressed by the fact that we've got two shutouts in a row,” Kljestan said. “A couple of good performances here, three points for each team, now looking forward to the Open Cup against them, that will be a good one.”
