Cristian Cásseres Jr. made his second start of the 2019 season on Saturday night and scored the team's lone goal, the first of his career in Major League Soccer.
"It was a very important goal in my career, and in my life," Cásseres said. "It’s my first goal here. I’m very grateful for that, I'm happy."
The 19-year-old Venezuelan smashed home a ball in the box after a corner kick bounced around and landed at his feet. It was his first MLS goal in his fifth game (three starts).
The defensive midfielder has logged 90 minutes with New York Red Bulls II this season and twice has started and played the full 90 for the MLS side.
"I came here and I’m trying to play in MLS, but if I play in USL, I’ll play the same way, because ultimately, I represent the New York Red Bulls," he said.
Cásseres has earned multiple youth national team call ups, representing Venezuela at both the U-17 and U-20 levels.
Despite the goal in a loss, the club's third in a row, Cásseres said the team needs to quickly turn their attention to their next opponent, Sporting Kansas City.
"Yes, we lost 2-1, but we have to put that aside and now get ready for the next game against Kansas City," Cásseres said.
