Match Recap: NYRB II Erases Two-Goal Deficit, Earns Point in 2-2 Draw Against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC

PITTSBURGH, PA (August 20, 2022) – New York Red Bulls II (3-18-4, 13 points) and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (13-7-5, 44 points) played to a 2-2 draw on Saturday, August 20, at Highmark Stadium.

Pittsburgh opened the scoring in the 21st minute. After a ball was sent into the box, Russell Cicerone headed the ball back to the center of the box, where Robbie Mertz ripped a shot into the net.

The home side doubled their advantage in the 42nd minute, as Mekeil Williams headed in a corner kick from Kenardo Forbes.

New York cut the deficit in half in the 44th minute, as O’Vonte Mullings made a run down the near edge of the box and sent in a low ball that was immediately shot by John Murphy.

Red Bulls II evened the score in the 56th minute, as Jordan Adebayo-Smith made a long run down the center of the field, drew multiple defenders, and played a ball to Wiki Carmona, who sent a low shot into the back of the net.

New York erased a two-goal deficit to earn a result for the first time since September 30, 2021, against Loudoun United FC.

Murphy’s goal was his second of the season, with Mullings increasing his assist total to four on the season, moving him back into the team lead.

The goal for Carmona was the first of his USL Championship career, and Adebayo-Smith collected his second assist of the season on the play.

Hassan Ndam moved into fourth in club history for minutes played, passing Jordan Scarlett.

Giannis Nikopolidis recorded four saves in the contest and passed Wallis Lapsley for seventh in Red Bulls II history for goalkeeper minutes.

Following the match, New York will travel to face Birmingham Legion FC on Sunday, August 28. Kickoff at Protective Stadium is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET with coverage available on ESPN+.
