Match Recap: NYRB II Falls to Memphis 901 FC, 2-1, at MSU Soccer Park

MONTCLAIR, NJ (August 3, 2022) – New York Red Bulls II (2-17-3, 9 points) fell to Memphis 901 FC (13-5-3, 42 points) 2-1 on Wednesday, August 3, at MSU Soccer Park.

Memphis struck first in the 18th minute after Chris Allan sprung Jeremy Kelly for a breakaway, who took a low shot after a 40-yard run to open the scoring.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 70th minute, with Phillip Goodrum heading in a free kick that was served in by Aaron Malloy.

Red Bulls II cut the lead in half in the 88th minute. Steven Sserwadda slipped a perfectly placed through ball to Jordan Adebayo-Smith, who went in untouched and placed a low shot into the back of the net.

The goal for Adebayo-Smith was his fourth of the season and eighth of his USL Championship career. His four goals lead the team. Sserwadda’s assist was his first in USL Championship play. He has scored or assisted in each of New York’s last two matches.

Red Bulls Academy products Davi Alexandre and Erick Ruiz made their professional debuts, becoming the sixth and seventh Academy players to make their debut this year.

Alexandre became the third youngest player in club history to appear in a match at 15 years and 181 days old. He is also the second youngest player to appear in a match this season in USL Championship, only behind New York’s Nathan Worth.

Giannis Nikopolidis recorded a career-high nine saves in the match, which ranks third all-time for a single match for a New York goalkeeper.

Following the match, New York will host Atlanta United 2 on Tuesday, August 9, at MSU Soccer Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET with coverage on ESPN+.
