MIAMI, FL (March 12, 2022) – New York Red Bulls II (0-1-0, 0 points) fell to Miami FC (1-0-0, 3 points) 2-0 on Saturday, March 12, at Riccardo Silva Stadium in the 2022 season opener for both clubs.
Miami struck first in the 11th minute. Defender Mark Segbers sent in a cross from the near side of the field that was headed into the net by midfielder Josh Pérez. New York had a chance to equalize late in the first half. Midfielder Jonathan Filipe maneuvered past a Miami defender and placed a shot just wide of the net.
The home side doubled their advantage in the second half as Segbers followed up his miss on an initial shot and found the back of the net on his second attempt.
Three New York players made their professional debuts. Filipe and defender Lamine Conte both played the full 90 minutes, and Red Bulls Academy defender Paul Smajlaj came on in the 84th minute as a substitute.
Defender Christopher Cragwell and forward Jordan Adebayo-Smith made their club debuts along with Conte, Filipe, and Smajlaj.
Midfielder John Murphy wore the captain’s armband for New York.
New York will remain on the road to face Atlanta United 2 on Wednesday, March 16. Kickoff from Fifth Third Bank Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, with coverage available on ESPN+.
