HARRISON, N.J. (February 4, 2019) – New York Red Bulls II have re-signed Guatemalan defender Allen Yanes to a USL contract, pending league and federation approval, and signed defender Jordan Scarlett to a new USL contract, pending league and federation approval, the club announced today.
Yanes, 21, started in nine of 12 matches he appeared in for NYRB II in his first season with the club. In 873 minutes played, he recorded 37 clearances, 36 interceptions, and two blocks for the NYRB II backline while tallying one assist on the offensive end.
“In limited time last year, Allen proved to be a very reliable and versatile defender, two words we truly value here,” said NYRB II Head Coach John Wolyniec. “His intelligence and tactical awareness are two other qualities he possesses that we think give him a lot of potential in our system. We are very excited to keep him in our club.”
For country, Yanes was called up and made his first appearance for the Guatemalan National team in 2018. The NYRB II defender was featured as the starting right back for the international friendly against Argentina, playing for 45 minutes in Guatemala’s 3-0 loss on Sept. 8.
Scarlett, 23, made 14 starts in 20 games played in 2018, his second year with NYRB II. Despite missing a third of the season to injury, he finished second on the team in clearances (102), third in blocks (12), and sixth in interceptions (45). Down the stretch, Scarlett helped NYRB II’s backline to three-straight matches of allowing just one goal and then back-to-back clean sheets in the first two rounds of the USL Playoffs.
“It is great to have Jordan back with our team again,” said Wolyniec. “We feel he has a number of the qualities we are looking for in a first team center back and we are confident as a staff that he will do the work needed to develop in our system.”
Scarlett, a Bronx, N.Y. native, played four years at Iona College before being selected by the Red Bulls in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.
NYRB II opens the 2019 season on March 9, when Swope Park Rangers visit MSU Soccer Park on the campus of Montclair State University. For tickets, visit www.newyorkredbulls.com/2/tickets or call 1.877.727.6223.
