HARRISON, N.J. (May 19, 2023) – New York Red Bulls II have added Brazilian defender Diego Kauan on loan from Red Bull Bragantino until the end of the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro season, the club announced today. New York has the option to extend the loan through the 2024 season.
“Diego’s defensive skill at such a young age makes us very excited to bring him on board,” Sporting Director Denis Hamlett said. “Red Bull Bragantino have produced a great talent and he will fit right in with what we are building.”
Diego “Dija” Kauan has appeared in 8 matches for Red Bull Bragantino’s second team this season, starting in seven during the 2023 Campeonato Paulista A3 season. The defender logged 517 minutes total in those matches and racked up the defensive stats. Kauan tallied 18 interceptions and 48 tackles while only committing eight fouls.
“We are always looking for players that will succeed in our system, and we believe Diego is a great example of that,” Head Coach Ibrahim Sekagya said. “His ability as a defender as well as his all-around game is something that will improve our squad moving forward”.
Mainly playing at right back this season, Kauan has also seen success in his technical game in addition to his defense. The defender had a 63% successful dribble rate and a 75% successful pass rate in his matches for RBB. He also had a 70% success rate in defensive duels, with 36 wins in 56 attempts.
Kauan has joined New York Red Bulls II for training and will participate in the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro season.
