HARRISON, N.J. (March 21, 2023) - New York Red Bulls II have signed former Akron Goalkeeper Will Meyer to an MLS NEXT Pro contract, the club announced today.
“We are delighted to announce Will’s signing for the upcoming season” Sporting Director Denis Hamlett said. “From what we have seen from him so far, we know he will be a vocal leader with the team in addition to being incredibly skilled in net.”
The 24-year-old keeper played five total years in college, with his first three being at Louisville and his last two at Akron. After transferring to Akron in 2020, Meyer found success that came along with his consistent playing time. In 2020, he started nine games, totaling 27 saves and posting a 1.53 goals against average with two shutouts.
“In the short time that we have seen Will we are already impressed with his skillset,” New York Red Bulls II Head Coach Ibrahim Sekagya said. “He has a very strong presence in net and makes his voice heard to everyone on the pitch.”
Will had the best year of his collegiate career in 2021 with the Zips, where he started all 18 games that the school played, registering 47 saves and a 1.06 goals against average with six shutouts. Meyer’s success in 2021 led him to getting drafted in the second round of the 2022 MLS SuperDraft by Nashville SC.
