NYRB II Familiar Faces Make an Impact in New York Academy Derby

New York Red Bulls Academy defeated NYCFC Academy twice in the first New York Academy Derby of the year on March 25. The U-15’s won 2-0, and the U-17’s raised the New York Academy Derby Trophy following a 3-2 victory.

There were multiple players that played for the U-17’s that saw playing time with Red Bulls II both in 2021 as well as this season.

Midfielder Ezra Widman, who made his professional debut in a start at Atlanta United 2 on March 16, recorded a first half brace to help set the tone early. Forward Illia Tyrkus, who made his professional debut the same night as Widman, helped set up the first goal.

Forward Nicholas Rabiu, who appeared in eight matches last season for Red Bulls II, scored the eventual game-winner in the second half for Red Bulls Academy.

Defender Paul Smajlaj and midfielder Arian Recinos also started for Red Bulls Academy. Both have seen time in the opening month of the USL Championship season.
