As we reflect upon our first USL season, NewYorkRedBulls.com reviews the top five moments of Red Bulls II’s inaugural campaign.
Following a 3-4-3 start to the season, New York Red Bulls II’s midseason success on a grueling six-match road trip from May 30 to July 4 was a vital turning point in the season. New York went four games unbeaten on the trip and strung together their first three-game winning-streak, a feat the team successfully replicated twice more before the end of the season.
During the six-game road trip, Dan Metzger was named USL Player of the Week and to the USL Team of the Week. Karl Ouimette, Konrad Plewa and Mike Da Fonte were also named to USL Team of the Week during the stretch.
Despite opening the trip with an initial loss against Richmond and a draw in Montreal, Red Bulls II earned its first road win against Wilmington, 1-0. The win was just what they needed ahead of a trip to Louisville, one of the top two teams in the conference. Konrad Plewa and Derrick Etienne both scored and the defense grabbed its second consecutive clean sheet to hand Louisville its first home loss of the season, 2-0. It was the first time the team strung together back-to-back wins all season.
Red Bulls II extended its winning streak to three the following week against Saint Louis FC in which Plewa scored a brace to make it three goals in two games, 4-1. The win improved the club to its first winning record since Week three and inserted the team into the USL playoff picture.
