Strong returns and consistent results helped earn Daniel Edelman and Cameron Harper spots on MLS Young Players of the Matchday.

Following his return from the FIFA U-20 World Cup, Edelman has made his presence known for New York. The midfielder scored his first goal of the season on Saturday night, netting a throw-in from Harper in the match’s 32nd minute.

Edelman wasn’t finished following his goal, as the homegrown player also helped double his team’s lead at the end of the first half. In the 45th minute, the midfielder set a Cristian Cásseres Jr. goal in motion, cutting off an Atlanta pass and sending the ball to Tom Barlow, leading to the goal.

Aside from having a hand in New York’s first two goals, Edelman also completed 26/38 of his passes, recorded two tackles, and intercepted two passes.

Harper has been a versatile and consistent presence on New York’s backline. On Saturday, he made seven defensive actions and helped the Red Bulls to their clean sheet against Atlanta.

In addition to his assist to Edelman, Harper completed two key passes and sent nine into the final third.

Productive on both ends of the pitch, Harper’s performance on Saturday comes days after the 21-year-old scored his first goal of the season in New York’s draw against Charlotte. The goal, and his defensive efforts, earned him Team of the Matchday for Matchday 20.

Making big plays for the Red Bulls this weekend, both Edelman and Harper stood out in one of the most successful games New York has had this season, claiming their spots among the week’s brightest, youngest stars.
