New York Red Bull’s midfielder Frankie Amaya made his 100th career appearance on Wednesday night with a start against his former club, FC Cincinnati.
Amaya, who has been with the Red Bulls since 2021 and in the league since 2019, is having one of his best statistical seasons to date. The Santa Ana, CA native has three goals this year, the same number as his first four seasons combined. He has also contributed two assists, 15 interceptions, a 79.3% passing percentage, and a 57.1% duel percentage – tied for the best of his career.
Amaya’s three goals in 2023 came in big moments. The midfielder started his scoring burst on June 24, coming off the bench to secure a brace in the Red Bull’s 4-0 win over Atlanta United. He then added his third goal in three games on July 8 in a 2-1 win over New England when he sent a ball from Dante Vanezir into the net.
In the 2019 MLS SuperDraft, Amaya was selected number one overall by FC Cincinnati, making him the fifth ever No. 1 draft pick out of UCLA. In his one season with the Bruins, he recorded 10 starts in 14 appearances, with two goals and two assists.
During his time at UCLA, he also took the pitch for the United States U-20 National Team where he helped the squad win the CONCACAF U-20 Tournament, ensuring a spot in the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Amaya spent the 2019 and 2020 MLS seasons with the Orange and Blue before being traded to New York in 2021.
During his time with FC Cincinnati, he made 40 appearances with 36 starts. His first career goal came on July 16, 2020, in a 1-0 Cincinnati win over Atlanta.
Since coming to the Red Bulls, Amaya has made 60 appearances, being a constant contributor to New York’s midfield. This season, his efforts have landed him spots on two MLS Team of the Matchday teams on Matchday 21 and 24.
With 100 career appearances and previous success under his belt, Frankie Amaya is set to continue to provide a constant spark on the pitch.
