HANOVER, N.J. – As the team approaches their third game of the season, the New York Red Bulls look to be on the verge of unveiling their ace-in-the-hole.
After missing out on the team’s first two matches of the season, Gonzalo Veron returned to the training pitch on Tuesday morning and looks to be ready to go for Saturday’s matchup with the Houston Dynamo at Red Bull Arena.
The Argentine was arguably the team’s most impressive player throughout their preseason camp in Florida, impressing with his pace and skill on the ball. Often paired up top with forward Bradley Wright-Phillips in a two-striker formation, the tandem teamed up to wreak havoc on opposing defenses.
Come Saturday night, Red Bulls fans may just get their first look at this dynamic duo.
“We used him a lot as a striker in two in preseason,” head coach Jesse Marsch said. “I think there’s potential to do that again [on Saturday], but he can also tilt to the left or the right, as well. We’ll think about exactly how we want to game plan against Houston and then put something in place.”
With their offense struggling to produce through 180 minutes of action, Veron’s return is certainly a welcome addition to the side. Now with a full preseason under his belt, Veron looks primed to showcase his considerable talent on the MLS stage.
“He gives us another attacking option,” goalkeeper Luis Robles said. “During preseason, he was really good for us. We have a lot of quality when we’re going forward, and to be able to add a piece like Gonzalo is important. Having all the options possible for Jesse is important, but it also puts pressure on the other team not knowing what to expect. But we’re really excited to get him back on the field.”
