One of the oldest rivalries in Major League Soccer is renewed for a 20th season with the first installment of the Atlantic Cup on Sunday afternoon, as the New York Red Bulls play host to D.C. United at Red Bull Arena.
Both teams return to action following a week off after their first matches of the season, the Red Bulls opening with a 1-1 draw at Sporting Kansas City, while United began with a 1-0 home win against the Montreal Impact.
- The Red Bulls open their 2015 home campaign after a week off, kicking off their season with a 1-1 draw at Sporting Kansas City on March 7, the lone New York goal coming from Lloyd Sam.
- D.C. United also return to action after an off week, beginning their season on the right foot with a 1-0 win against the Montréal Impact in week one, the game’s lone goal netted by Jairo Arrieta.
- Home form ruled in the regular season a year ago, with United winning both league meetings at RFK Stadium (both by shutout), and the Red Bulls winning their lone home game (also by shutout). United last won in Harrison in league play during the 2011 season.
- The teams also met in the Eastern Conference Championship a year ago, the Red Bulls winning 4-3 on aggregate. It was the fifth time in 19 MLS seasons the arch-rivals have met in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
