Atlantic Angst
Since the two clubs first match against each other in 1996, there have been 98 total matches between the Atlantic rivals.
New York beat D.C. earlier this month in the U.S. Open Cup, but that was against a fully rotated squad. This will be the first full-strength matchup of the 2022 season.
The Red Bulls haven’t beaten D.C. at Red Bull Arena since 2018. To change that, they’ll have to bring their A game on Saturday night.
Summer Break
New York’s match against D.C. will be their seventh match across all competitions in the month of may. It will also be their last before a two week international break.
For the Red Bulls, it’s like the last final of the semester. Will they fully focus and finish strong, or already have one eye towards vacation?
Against a dangerous D.C. United attack, and for a Red Bulls team still looking for their first win at Red Bull Arena, the answer to that question will be a determining factor in the final score.
Out of Service
D.C. United’s attack has run through Taxi.
Taxiarchis “Taxi” Fountas, since his first appearance for the club on April 17, he has made an instant impact.
In only 471 minutes, Fountas has 31 total scoring attempts, including five goals and three assists to his name.
If New York wants to keep their first league clean sheet since April 24, all eyes will have to be on Fountas.
