This weekend’s matchup will be the first of three meetings between the clubs this season.
Last year, the Rochester Rhinos ended NYRB II’s season in the Eastern Conference Semifinals of the USL Playoffs. Konrad Plewa was issued a controversial straight red card in the 22nd minute and Steevan Dos Santos scored twice in the win at Rochester, 2-0.
Red Bulls II tied Rochester in the only game played at Red Bull Arena in the team’s first USL game, 0-0, and is 0-2-1 against the Rhinos in the USL regular season.
Last weekend, New York won its second game of the season in convincing fashion, defeating Bethlehem Steel FC at Red Bull Arena, 4-0. The win improved NYRB II to 2-0-1 and a league-best goal differential of +6. By the end of Week 3, NYRB II stood in first place of the Eastern Conference on goal differential.
The clean sheet victory was the club’s second in a row for goalkeeper Ryan Meara. New York has not allowed a goal in 225 minutes, last conceding in the 45th minute of the home opener against Toronto FC II on March 26.
Derrick Etienne Jr., who was named to the USL Team of the Week for his one goal and two assists performance against Bethlehem, became the club’s all-time assists leader with five career USL helpers.
Brandon Allen is currently on a three-game points streak. With a brace in the opener, a goal against Louisville City FC and an assist last week, he leads NYRB II with seven points.
Junior Flemmings has recorded points in back-to- back games. The Jamaican had a goal and assist at Louisville, and assisted Etienne Jr.’s goal against Bethlehem.
Sunday could also mean the debut for midfielder Zoumana Simpara, who signed on April 16, or defender Cheikh M’Baye, who joined NYRB II on April 8.
Rochester Rhinos enters the match with a 1-1-0 record, after a loss last week to Richmond Kickers, 1-0. Christian Volesky, who has scored twice against New York in his career, leads the team in scoring with its only goal this season in the club’s opening day win.
