MONTCLAIR – The New York Red Bulls U-23 team battled back against FC Motown to advance to the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night at MSU Soccer Park. Red Bulls U-23s advanced to the second round by winning a PK shootout after a 4-4 draw.
The U-23s surrendered a two-goal lead in the second half after a weather delay, with FC Motown finding the equalizer in the 71st minute. Each team then scored during extra time to send the match to PKs.
Red Bulls U-23 coach Simon Nee did not have a chance to have a full practice with his squad, as many players are still in the midst of returning home from college.
Three current Red Bulls Academy products started the match, including Omar Sowe, who scored New York’s third goal. All three goals were scored by Red Bulls Academy products, with Brian Saramago and JP Marin both finding the back of the net. The Red Bulls finished the match with seven teenagers on the field. Current academy player Sal Esposito made the final PK
The Red Bulls U-23s are set to face USL Champions Memphis 901 FC on May 15, with kickoff time to be determined. The team will compete in USL League Two this Summer, with the first match on Saturday, May 18 against Evergreen FC.
