MatchRecap_16x9

The New York Red Bulls lost to Atlanta United in the regular season for the first ever, as an early first half goal by Giorgos Giakoumakis ended up being the difference.

The goal came in the seventh minute when a rebound off of Carlos Coronel fell to Giakoumakis, who scored his second goal in his MLS career.

"After a loss like that, I feel that we have to reflect, put in a good analysis tomorrow, and then we go forward with the next game," Head Coach Gerhard Struber said. "Right now the feeling is that we are disappointed about the loss."

Homegrown signing Peter Stroud made his first MLS start and played the full 90 minutes. Andrés Reyes made his 50th MLS appearance, but had to leave the match in the second half.

"We created the most possible chances, but not high-quality chances," Struber said of the second half. "There were some good chances, especially with starting transition moments."

The loss ends New York's four-match unbeaten streak heading into Saturday night in Atlanta.

New York will return home to face the San Jose Earthquakes on April 8. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm. ET with coverage on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV in English and Spanish and New York Red Bulls Radio in English via Tune In, the New York Red Bulls app, and NewYorkRedBulls.com.
