MATCH RECAP, pres. by Provident Bank: Red Bulls Grab a Point on the Road

Match Recap - ATL

The New York Red Bulls and Atlanta United FC battled to a scoreless draw in Georgia on Saturday night.

"It's a great point, in my opinion, to be honest," Head Coach Sandro Schwarz said. "The behavior of the whole group, for me, was great. And with all these injuries, it's not easy, but how we handled it today was top."

Carlos Coronel came up big with multiple impressive saves in the first half for New York, in his 150th career appearance across all competitions for New York. He becomes the second goalkeeper in franchise history to accomplish the feat.

Six of Coronel's seven saves came in the first half.

"He’s very important for us as a player, as a character, as a person," Schwarz said. "We need him in these moments when the opponent is dominant, and for sure, then the goalkeeper, especially on the road, and he did it very well."

Coronel recorded his second shutout of the season and the 36th MLS shutout of his New York career. The goalkeeper has now posted shutouts in back-to-back matches.

The Red Bulls controlled the rest of the match from midway through the first half on, maintaining nearly 60 percent possession throughout the match.

New York couldn't find the breakthrough on the offensive side of the ball, though, but take a point back to Sports Illustrated Stadium.

New York made over 600 passes on the night, with over 90% passing accuracy.

Julian Hall made his first career MLS start and became the third youngest player in franchise history to make their first career MLS start behind Eddie Gaven and Jozy Altidore at 16 years, 349 days old.

"In the end, with all these young guys, with the whole group, with the energy, it’s a very, very important point and a big step in our development," Schwarz said.

Sean Nealis moved into third place in franchise history for most MLS minutes played by a defender with 11,510 minutes played.

New York will embark on a two-match homestand, beginning with a match against Orlando City SC on Saturday, March 15 at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. ET with coverage on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV in English and Spanish and New York Red Bulls Radio in English via the New York Red Bulls app and NewYorkRedBulls.com.
