MATCH RECAP, pres. by Provident Bank: Red Bulls, Orlando Battle to 2-2 Draw

Match Recap 16x9

The New York Red Bulls battled back to earn at point at home, a 2-2 draw vs. Orlando City SC on Saturday afternoon.

"I would say, most of the time, we control the goals," Head Coach Sandro Schwarz said. "We conceded two goals very easy, in an easy way, especially the second goal. But that we have to be happy at the end of this game with this point? That's, for me, not possible today, to be honest."

New York went down early, with a longrange shot from Orlando's Martin Ojeda.

RBNY drew even after video review called for a penalty on Orlando for a foul on Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. The attacker stepped up and converted the penalty, tucking his shot in the bottom corner of the net. It was his first MLS goal and first for the New York Red Bulls.

Orlando pulled ahead heading into the break, with Marco Pašalić sneaking through the backline pushing forward for a clean shot against Carlos Coronel, which he slotted home.

Just moments after the restart for the second half, Raheem Edwards found Peter Stroud streaking toward the endline. Stroud's cross found Dennis Gjengaar, who was able to redirect the ball into the back of the net.

"It's a good feeling," Gjengaar said about his second-straight start. "The confidence from the coach. Felt like I showed that I wasn't the wrong man to put in. So hopefully the chances keep coming.”

Gjengaar recorded his first MLS goal and the third of his MLS career. Stroud recorded his first MLS assist of the season and the second of his career. Edwards recorded his first assist for New York and the 29th of his MLS career.

Gjengaar nearly put New York ahead late in the match, hitting the post late in the game.

Coronel came up big with a pair of game-saving stops on Orlando's relentless attack.

"Seventy-five minutes we were playing some good soccer," Stroud said. "We created some good moments. I think it’s about creating more and more. We’re going to watch the tape tomorrow, obviously, and see where we can do better. It’s always tough to think about it right after the game but we have to go back and see where we could’ve created more chances.”

Sean Nealis made his 139th career MLS appearance, which ties him with Aaron Long for third place in franchise history for most MLS appearances by a defender.

New York will host Toronto FC on Saturday, March 22 at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
