MATCH RECAP, pres. by Provident Bank: Red Bulls Fall in Open Cup

Match Recap 061119

The New York Red Bulls and New England Revolution played out a U.S. Open Cup classic at the MSU Soccer Park in Montclair, New Jersey on Tuesday, swapping haymakers over 120-plus minutes of play â€“ and the Revs were the ones left standing in the end, thanks to a Teal Bunbury double.

Former RBNY HomegrownJuan Agudelo stunned the home crowd by flicking home the opener less than a minute after the opening whistle, beating Ryan Meara from close range after a savvy backheel from Juan Fernando Caicedo. But Tom Barlow responded quickly for the hosts to level matters at 1-1.

Cristian Casseres pushed the hosts in front with a fine long-range effort shortly after halftime, and for most of the second half it appeared that would see RBNY through, especially in the moments after the Red Bulls earned a penalty kick in the 65th minute.

But Matt Turner made a huge save to block Alex Muyl's spot kick, and five minutes from full time Bunbury bewitched Amro Tarek on the turn to equalize. New England were reduced to 10 men by the injury-time ejection of Luis Caicedo, but were the more inspired side in extra time and Bunbury won it with a solo run in transition capped by a delicate lofted strike over Meara.
