MATCH RECAP: Red Bulls U-23s Fall In First Round of Open Cup

QUEENS, N.Y. (May 11, 2016) – The New York Red Bulls Under-23 team fell to New York Pancyprian Freedoms, 2-1 in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night at Belson Stadium on the campus of St. John’s University.


Zach Knudson gave the Red Bulls an early lead, but Pancyprian Freedoms would score twice in the second half.


The Red Bulls were awarded a penalty in the 14th minute, after Knudson was tripped up trying to take a touch around the goalkeeper. Knudson had been played through the defense on a flicked pass from Arun Basuljevic. Knudson stepped to the spot and converted to give the Red Bulls an early lead.


Pancyprian Freedoms scored in the 59th and 65th minutes.


The match was the first of the year for the Red Bulls Under-23 team, which gathered this week as players return from college. The team consists of 12 Red Bulls Academy products, as well as other invited college players.


The Under-23s compete in the Premier Development League, which kicks off this weekend with a match on Saturday, May 21, against the Jersey Express.
