HARRISON, N.J. (January 23, 2017) - The New York Red Bulls have signed midfielder Dan Metzger, the club announced today. Metzger is a product of the Red Bulls academy and played two seasons for the club's USL team, New York Red Bulls II.
Metzger totaled 40 appearances, three goals and three assists in two seasons with Red Bulls II. He also appeared in six USL Playoff games, and helped NYRB II to the 2016 Regular Season Championship, Eastern Conference Championship and USL Cup.
"Dan has shown well over the last two years with our USL team," said Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch. "Between those games and opportunities in first team training, he has earned a spot on the MLS roster. We look forward to him continuing his professional development this year."
The midfielder has two first-team appearances for the Red Bulls. Metzger made his first team debut in the 2015 International Champions Cup victory against Chelsea FC, and scored in a 2016 friendly win against Club America.
The Holmdel, N.J., native has been associated with the Red Bulls organization since 2010. During that time, he was a member of the U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team and U.S. Soccer Development Academy U-16 National Starting XI for the 2009-10 season, an ESPN High School All-American, All-County, All-State, and NSCAA All-Region player.
The 23-year-old played four years of college soccer at Maryland. Metzger appeared in 88 career matches and tallied eight goals and four assists.
After signing with Red Bulls II, Metzger made seven total appearances for the U-23 U.S. Men's National Team, including four starts, in 2015. He also helped the U.S. U-23s to a third place finish in the 2015 Toulon Tournament.
