HARRISON, N.J. (May 9, 2019) – The New York Red Bulls have signed Red Bulls Academy product and New York native Alex Muyl to a new MLS contract, the club announced today. Muyl, 23, signs a new multi-year deal as he nears his 100th MLS appearance.
“We are pleased to complete this deal and extend Alex’s time with our club,” said Sporting Director Denis Hamlett. “Alex is the type of player that fits well in our system. He works hard, does the little things right and has the skills to be effective with and without the ball. Everyone in our organization is proud to see our Homegrown Players not just moving from the academy into MLS but having an impact and contributing to our club’s success year after year.”
Muyl, a New York, N.Y. native, is in his fourth professional season after being signed as a Homegrown Player in December of 2015. The midfielder has recorded 10 goals and 15 assists in 95 regular season matches. The Red Bulls are 51-22-22 in MLS when Muyl appears in MLS play.
Across all competitions, he has accumulated 11 goals and 16 assists in 120 games played.
“Alex has earned this contract and he is a winner,” said Head Coach Chris Armas. “He has worked hard to develop his game and has grown into an important part of our team. Alex’s commitment to the team is inspirational and his qualities, both attacking and defending, make him a player that we can rely on.”
Through eight appearances this year Muyl has recorded two goals, already just one off of his career high. His most productive season came in 2018 when he tallied three goals and five assists while appearing in 30 matches en route to the 2018 Supporters’ Shield and new MLS records for wins (22) and points (71) in a season.
“I’m really happy to be signing a new contract at this club,” said Muyl. “I feel lucky to be at such a special organization, one that I’ve supported and played at since I was a kid. I look forward to the years to come, and I’m excited to be a part of this club’s future.”
Muyl and the Red Bulls travel to Texas to take on FC Dallas this Saturday, May 11. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET with coverage on Univision Deportes, Twitter, and Red Bulls Radio.
