OH, BALTIMORE: Everything you need to know about the 2016 MLS SuperDraft

The New York Red Bulls enter the 2016 MLS SuperDraft which will be held on Thursday, Jan. 14 at Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Md. There will be a livestream of the SuperDraft on NewYorkRedBulls.com starting at 1 p.m. ET. Fans can also follow along via the SuperDraft tracker.



New York Red Bulls SuperDraft Status (as of Jan. 13)


  • Draft Picks: No. 18 (First Round), No. 38 (Second Round)
  • Trades: Chicago Fire acquired the No. 57 (Third Round) pick from New York Red Bulls via a trade on Jan. 20, 2015, which the Red Bulls acquired from Vancouver. Toronto FC acquired the No. 59 (Third Round) pick from Red Bulls via a trade on Dec. 13, 2013. D.C. United acquired the No. 79 (Fourth Round) pick from Red Bulls via a trade.


MLS SuperDraft Format

The format of the 2016 SuperDraft are four rounds with each team entitled to one pick per round. The first eight picks in each round were determined by each team’s finish in the Supporters' Shield standings. The remaining positions were ranked by fewest regular season points among the teams that were eliminated in the same round of the MLS Cup Playoffs.


When a player is selected in the draft, most will enter training camp with the clubs that drafted them. Unless claimed on waivers, a player who was drafted by a particular team through the SuperDraft and did not sign is placed on that team’s, “College Protected List,” until Dec. 31 of the year after the draft. After Dec. 31, the team loses the rights to the player.


Most players available in the draft are NCAA college seniors. Generation adidas players and non-collegiate international players are also eligible for selection in the SuperDraft. Clubs may nominate players for the League’s Draft-Eligible List, and only players from that list may be selected.


Full House

The New York Red Bulls enter the draft with all 28 MLS roster spots full after the signings of six Homegrown Players - Brandon Allen, Mael Corboz, Derrick Etienne Jr., Alex Muyl, Scott Thomsen and Chris Thorsheim - and bringing back Damien Perrinelle. However, there is still plenty of room for players on the Red Bulls’ USL affiliate, New York Red Bulls II, who have five players on the roster. Here are the current Red Bulls and Red Bulls II rosters:

Family Matters

The New York Red Bulls have seven academy products who have completed their senior seasons at college. After signing six Homegrown Players in December, there is always a possibility that the Red Bulls will look to keep things in house and look to add former players.
