HANOVER, N.J. (May 21, 2016) – The New York Red Bulls U-23 opened up their Premier Development League season Saturday with a 2-1 win over Jersey Express.
On a rainy night, Arun Basuljevic opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after receiving a pass from the Oakland, N.J. native, Zach Knudson. The Red Bulls back line intercepted a pass as it sparked a counter attack. Knudson slipped a ball to Basuljevic, where the midfielder calmly netted the ball into the corner.
A strong Red Bulls performance protecting a 1-0 lead came to a halt when a handball inside their own box resulted in a penalty kick. Jersey Express midfielder Oscar Otto stepped up and evened the match in the 62nd minute.
In the 86th minute, second half substitute Nicholas Melo curled a shot with his right foot into the side netting to give the Red Bulls a 2-1 lead after a quick build up down the right side.
The teams will meet two more times during the regular season in June and July.
The Red Bulls U-23s return to action on Wednesday, May 25 at the Red Bulls Training Facility to host the Baltimore Bohemians at 7 p.m.
