New York Red Bulls U-18 (1) vs. Empire United (0)
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (September 20, 2015) - The New York Red Bulls secured its fourth win of the season with a narrow victory at Empire United, 1-0. The Red Bulls enjoyed most of the possession in the first half, but struggled to breakdown the Empire defense. The best chance in the first half would fall to wide forward Rodrigo D’Andrea who miscued his shot with only the goalkeeper to beat.
The Red Bulls missed another golden opportunity to extend their lead in the second half when Mason Toye headed wide of the goal from close range after a good run and cross from Sean Teixeria on the right flank.
The only goal of the game would come just past the hour mark when a quickly taken free kick from Jared Gilbey found Kevin O’Toole who made a run forward from left back. O’Toole’s dangerous cross looped over the Empire goalkeeper to give the Red Bulls the lead. It was O’Toole first goal with the club and the eventual game-winner.
Empire committed more numbers forward after the goal and were rewarded a penalty in the 70th minute. Sam Ilin, who was playing up from the U-16’s, made the save to preserve the shutout and give the Red Bulls the win.
“It’s always tough to get a win on the road especially at the U-18 age group,” Kevin O’Toole said. “We found a way to grind out a result and that’s something that will be important to our success as the season moves forward. It’s also a good feeling to help our team get a win and a convenient time for my first goal with the club.”
The next Red Bulls U-18 game will be on the road against FC Delco on Saturday, Sept. 26.
