HARRISON, N.J. - The New York Red Bulls RDS teams have claimed 11 tournament championships at the midway point of the RDS Winter Showcase. For the boys teams, the Under-8, U-9, U-10, U-12 and U-13 squads have all claimed victories while the Girls U-10, U-11 and U-15 also won their tournaments.
RDS teams to play next weekend and onward include the Boys U-10, Boys U-11, Girls U-12, Girls U-13 and Girls U-14. The Red Bulls have up to three teams in some age groups due to the depth of the talent pool in some age groups.
All players were identified through participation in the RDS, and were recommended to play in the Showcase tournament by RDS coaches. As supplementary showcase teams, they play in only one tournament each and then disband, so as not to conflict with existing team commitments.
All teams play 5 v 5 tournaments at the Soccer Coliseum in Teaneck, N.J. The small-sided tournaments promote the importance of rotating playing positions, and ensuring players learn demands of the game in every position. Small squads ensure balanced playing time, and all players being in the thick of the action at all times.
Winter showcase performances are used as a means of identifying candidates for the summer showcase teams, which are a more comprehensive select experience, but still occur in off-seasons to avoid conflicts. The next opportunity to earn eligibility for selection for showcase teams is with the Spring RDS.
