How They’re Doing
Atlanta United has started the season hot, earning 10 points out of a possible 13 through their first five matches.
Through those five matches, they have the second-highest goalscoring total in the league with 12.
With many key players away from international break last weekend, they suffered their first loss of 2023, a 6-1 drubbing on the road courtesy of the Columbus Crew.
After missing the playoffs in 2022, Atlanta seems to be back to being a contender in the Eastern Conference this season.
Head-to-Head History
This has been a surprisingly lopsided series since Atlanta joined MLS in 2017.
In fourteen competitive matches between the two clubs, Atlanta has only beaten New York once. That win came in the first leg of the 2018 Eastern Conference semi-finals.
Since then, New York has been unbeaten in nine consecutive matches, including the last four at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Last season, the Red Bulls swept the season series with Atlanta with a pair of 2-1 victories.
Player to Watch- Forward Thiago Almada
Assuming he plays after returning from international break with Argentina, all eyes will be on the Argentinian on Saturday night.
Almada, who is coming off a season with six goals and 12 assists in 29 appearances, is well on his way to an MVP-caliber season.
In only four appearances in 2023, the World Cup-winning forward already had eight goal contributions, including four in his last outing against Portland.
If Almada is on the team sheet on Saturday, his name will be circled and highlighted as the one to look out for.
