How they’re doing
Three consecutive losses in MLS play have dropped Orlando out of a playoff spot into eighth place in the Eastern Conference.
The latest two losses came against teams that are also outside the playoff picture – D.C. United, 2-1, on July 31 and the New England Revolution, 3-0, at home on August 6. The other loss was against Philadelphia, 1-0, in Orlando on July 23.
This losing streak is part of an eight-match league stretch in which Orlando has won just once. The club is winless in its last five MLS matches, earning two draws prior to its three-match losing streak.
Its offensive woes have been the primary issue. Orlando has scored a league third-worst 27 goals this season. The Lions have scored just three goals during the five-match winless stretch.
Head-to-head
The Red Bulls hold a 9-6-2 edge over Orlando City since the Florida club joined MLS in 2015.
New York won the first meeting between in 2022, earning a 3-0 regular season victory in Orlando back in April thanks to goals from Luquinhas, Cristian Cásseres Jr. and Lewis Morgan.
Orlando got revenge in July, knocking the Red Bulls out of the U.S. Open Cup in the semifinals with a 5-1 victory at Exploria Stadium.
Player to watch – Goalkeeper Pedro Gallese
While Orlando has struggled to find goals this season, Gallese has helped keep the club in playoff contention.
He has already matched the number of clean sheets he recorded during his 2021 MLS All-Star campaign, earning seven shutouts in 23 starts.
Gallese has been known for his highlight reel saves this season.
The Peruvian international joined Orlando two years after starting all three games at the 2018 World Cup, his country’s first appearance in the tournament since 1982. He has earned 91 caps since making his debut in 2014.
Despite keeping a clean sheet in the intercontinental playoff showdown with Australia in June, Gallese and Peru will not be returning to the tournament after falling in the last-chance qualifier on penalty kicks.
