The New York Red Bulls return to Major League Soccer action on Sunday evening against Atlantic Cup rivals D.C. United.
New York has faced off against D.C. earlier this year, taking a 1-0 victory in U.S. Open Cup play in Head Coach Troy Lesesne’s first match at the helm.
Starting on Sunday will be Dante Vanzeir and Elias Manoel up top, with Luquinhas and Omir Fernandez pushing the attack.
Luquinhas recorded his second assist across all competitions in the Red Bulls’ last match on August 8. The Brazilian midfielder has scored three career goals against D.C. United in three career appearances. In D.C. United’s last visit to Red Bull Arena, Luquinhas scored his first-career MLS multi-goal game in a 4-1 victory.
Dru Yearwood and Daniel Edelman get the nod in the central midfield.
This will be the 87th regular season meeting between the Red Bulls and D.C. United, with D.C. holding the advantage with a 37-32-17 mark. The Red Bulls have posted a 3-1-1 mark in their last five matches across all competitions against D.C.
John Tolkin, Sean Nealis, Andrés Reyes and Cameron Harper start on the back line, with Carlos Coronel in goal.
Lesesne will have Tom Barlow, Ronald Donkor, Wiki Carmona, Peter Stroud, Kyle Duncan, Jayden Reid, Matt Nocita and Hassan Ndam available off the bench. Ryan Meara will serve as backup goalkeeper.
Frankie Amaya will miss the match due to illness, while Lewis Morgan, Cory Burke, Steven Sserwadda and Dylan Nealis are sidelined.
